Help! I Don't Have Enough Money!

Have you ever wanted something and didn’t have enough money to buy it? By saving just a little each week, you will be able to build your savings until you reach the amount you need or savings goal. To reach your savings goal, you must make saving as much a habit as brushing your teeth at bedtime.

What Gets Measured Gets Accomplished

To help you, here is our tip for success: Create a chart to remind you of your goal and to track your progress.

The first step is to see how much money you’ve already saved, if any, and subtract that amount from the total cost (don’t forget to add the sales tax). The remaining amount is your savings goal. Next, decide how much you can afford to save per week out of your allowance or money you receive from chores or jobs for your family and neighbors. As you save the amount you need each week, be sure to check it off to track your progress. Post your chart, along with a picture of what you want to buy, on the refrigerator or family bulletin board, so you’ll always be reminded of your goal. See the example below:

I am saving for: Soccer cleats             Cost:  $65            Savings Goal: $50

Amount Already Saved $15.00 X
Week 1 $10.00 X
Week 2 $10.00 X
Week 3 $10.00
Week 4 $10.00
Week 5 $10.00
Goal Accomplished

Tip: Ask your family, friends and neighbors if you can do some jobs for them to earn extra money towards your goal. That way, you can reach your goal even sooner.
