The return of “people power” is one way Vermonters can reduce gasoline consumption and help preserve our environment, according to the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition. VSECU agrees that riding our bicycles and walking is a great way to improve our environment as well as our overall health and therefore has contributed $5,000 to support the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition’s programs.
“VSECU has always been concerned about the health and wellbeing of its members, staff and the Vermont communities we serve,” said Yvonne M. Garand, VSECU’s Business Development Officer. “Therefore, we are becoming increasingly aware and supportive of organizations, such as the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition, whose mission it is to promote healthy activities as well as a cleaner environment. We want to keep Vermont as beautiful, safe and clean as possible for Vermonters today and for generations to follow.”
The Coalition’s programs include education and safety programs for bicyclists and walkers, while encouraging drivers to share the road. It also lobbies to improve conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians throughout Vermont.
“The Coalition wants folks to find out how much fun it is to bike and walk in this beautiful state,” said Nancy Schulz, the Coalition’s Executive Director. When you travel by bicycle or foot, you can observe wildlife, chat with your neighbors, and (literally!) smell the flowers. With drastically increasing rates of obesity, chronic disease, health care costs, global warming, traffic congestion and fuel oil prices, there is no better time than now to promote these simple solutions. VSECU’s support helps the Coalition to continue its vital work.”
