At VSECU, members can rely on their credit union to reach their goal of home ownership. But not all people are in a position to afford that dream. For many who wish to live in central Vermont, it is a challenge to find affordable home ownership or housing to rent. Recognizing this challenge, VSECU recently donated $2,500 to the Central Vermont Community Land Trust (CVCLT) to help Vermonters find housing that will suit their needs as well as their budgets.
According to Steven D. Post, VSECU’s chief executive officer, the CVCLT’s many housing development programs have not only renewed hope among Vermonters looking for affordable housing but also have rejuvenated aging neighborhoods.
“We recognize that finding affordable housing is becoming more and more challenging for low- and moderate-income Vermonters, and that has an unfortunate impact on every community," Post said. “We support and thank the Central Vermont Community Land Trust and its dedicated staff for helping people find housing that allows them to stay in Vermont and live in communities near where they work. CVCLT also helps make the dream of home ownership come true, important work that affects us all.”
CVCLT executive director, Preston Jump, spoke of the needs this gift will address, “Housing affordability is a key indicator of a region’s economic stability and desirability as a place to live and work. CVCLT is able to offer greater numbers of central Vermont residents a wide array of affordable housing opportunities, thereby strengthening the communities of our region, thanks to the vital support provided by VSECU as a community-minded partner.”
CVCLT not only builds new housing projects, but renovates and converts existing units in Vermont’s urban areas, small towns and mobile home parks, greatly enhancing aging or declining neighborhoods. CVCLT also works with shelters for battered women and the homeless and collaborates on community projects.
