3/18/09 - Beware of New Sophisticated Phone Scam Alert:

VSECU has received and confirmed reports of a highly sophisticated phone scam. If credit, debit, and or ATM card account information is provided, it allows fraudsters to immediately conduct business on the account number.

Please be cautious and question any telephone call you receive that is unsolicited and supposedly from VSECU or any financial institution. Never give out any information unless you are the individual that initiated the contact. This applies to all information you may provide:

  • verbally by telephone
  • using the telephone numeric touch pad
  • at internet sites

VSECU will never contact a member by phone, email or text message and solicit confidential, personal and/or account information unless the contact was initiated by the member first. If you receive a phone call, email or text message and are unsure if it was from VSECU, please contact us by phone.

This newest scam utilizes sophisticated technology that systematically dials numbers and may leave messages on answering machines. The message states that the caller is Vermont State Employees Credit Union and gives specific instructions for the recipient to contact the security department to reactivate the member’s account by pressing various buttons. This action provides immediate access to card account information and fraudulent transactions begin.

If you believe you have fallen victim to this scam or other fraudulent activity, please report it directly to VSECU:
