Security Alert

01/21/09 - Debit & Credit Card Processor Victim of Security Breach

How This Affects our VSECU Members

VSECU has been notified that Heartland Payment Systems, a credit and debit card payment processer, has experienced a breach within their system recently, resulting in both credit and debit card numbers being compromised.  Heartland processes card transactions for businesses such as pay-at-the-pump gas stations, parking lots, retail stores, restaurants, school campuses, hospitality locations and community banks.  Heartland has confirmed that personal account holder information such as social security number, PINs, addresses or telephone numbers were not compromised and that the intrusion has been contained.

Heartland Payment is just beginning to release information about this security breach to card issuers. What we know thus far is that debit cards and both VISA and MasterCard credit card account numbers may have been compromised.

Although Heartland states the incident has been contained, we take these types of incidents very seriously. For added security and peace of mind, VSECU will automatically reissue a new card for any member identified by Heartland Payment Systems whose card number may have been compromised. We will send a letter directly to members with information about card reissuance if and when we receive this information.

Our internal monitoring systems have not identified any pattern of fraudulent activity on our VSECU issued-cards. We will continue to monitor activity on a daily basis and as always, we encourage you to take the time to review your monthly statements to ensure that all activity is your activity.  If you see suspicious activity contact VSECU immediately.
Additional information about Heartland Payment Services and their announcement of the security breach can be viewed here including a Question and Answer section: http://www.2008breach.com/

As more information is released by Heartland, we will work to take whatever action necessary to protect our members.  Check here often for updated information regarding this issue.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call a Member Service Consultant at 802/800 371-5162.
